Are We Burning Our Kids Out Of Sport?


In encouraging both physical and psychological health, it is essential that children are physically active throughout their childhood and into adolescents. In this age group, participation in sports should promote positive personal development, and fundamentally should be enjoyable. Early specificity in sports training presents a problem as it can lead to injuries and burn out.

How do we make sure our kids are not getting burnt out in sport?:

  • encouraging open communication between coaches and participants that promotes honest feedback of pain and fatigue, without the fear of being punished or letting the team down
  • educating coaches, children and parents of the early warning signs of chronic injuries which includes fatigue, poor academic results, and generalized muscle pain which becomes more specific with continued training
  • focus on the importance of nutrition and hydration
  • having at least 1-2 rest days within any given week
  • having 2-3 rest months a year for any given sport
  • advocate for safe training and game conditions
