Wynum V Jets 12-12 Draw

WYNNUM Manly coach Paul Green thought his team had snatched a late win over the Ipswich Jets when he watched the ball leave the right boot of Reece Blayney in their bruising Intrust Super Cup clash.

The vocal Seagulls crowd in the Chook Pen also roared their approval – but the man with the whistle was in a great position and ruled the field goal attempt had shaved the upright.

It was just one of many key moments in an enthralling round 11 contest at BMD Kougari Oval.

“From where I was standing it looked like it went over. But apparently it only missed by that much (20 centimetres),” Green said.

Ipswich also had two field goal attempts, the last of which came from Brendon Lindsay with just 45 seconds left on the clock.

But Lindsay’s kick missed to the left, leaving both sides with a share of the competition points from the thrilling 12-12 draw.

Incredibly, it was Ipswich’s fourth draw from 11 games, meaning the Jets have the somewhat unwanted record of having chalked up the most draws in a single Queensland Cup season.

Ipswich (14 points) maintains its grip on fourth spot but is now in the middle of a major injury crisis.

“Before the game we had five guys out and then we lost Brendon Marshall in the warm up so we had to get Jarrod McInally, who had just played a full game of FOGS, to play on the wing for us,” Jets co-coach Shane Walker revealed.

“Then we lost three players with rib injuries early in the first half, so it was a great effort.

“Actually, in a way we were lucky to get a draw. We had bugger all ball. You never ever get the rub of the green, especially when you come here to Wynnum.”

Skipper Keiron Lander, fullback Marshall Chalk and hooker Michael Fisher were the players struck down with rib injuries.

Chalk and Fisher didn’t return after half-time but Lander battled on in a “courageous performance”.

“The physio told us at half-time he’s got a broken rib and he played the rest of the second half,” Walker said.

“He’s as tough as they come,”

Walker believes Lander is capable of making the step up to NRL level.

“There’s a number of guys in our side ... I dare say anyone in our side could go up to the Titans and do a job for them,” Walker said.

Like the Jets, Wynnum Manly was left with a depleted bench as the game went down to the wire.

Ipswich was guilty of turning over too much ball in the first half but when they held it they were rewarded with a try to Esi Tonga.

Tonga also had a hand in Ipswich’s second try shortly after the half-time break when he was put into space by Lorenzo Maafu.

Tonga sprinted down the right touch line and found Luke Capewell in support.

Capewell raced away to score under the posts for his ninth try of the Intrust Super Cup season.

Tweed 18 d Jets 8

Tweed Heads hold off Ipswich Jets

Played in driving rain at Piggabeen Sports Complex, the Seagulls scored three tries to two in their hard-fought 18-8 victory over the Jets.

Coach Ben Anderson later told The Gold Coast Bulletin the game was his club’s best win of the season to date – and their defence was especially pleasing.

Both sides played good football, and the visiting Ipswich Jets would be happy with their performance in keeping up with the competition pace-setters.

However, the Seagulls defence on their own line during the first 25-minutes of the second half proved the difference in the final wash-up, with the Jets unable to crack their line.

The Jets will next host the Central Comets – while Tweed will spend the week preparing for another blockbuster clash, this time against Redcliffe at Dolphin Oval.
