Training based carbohydrate requirements

How often, how intensely and the total number of hours a day you train will determine the amount of carbohydrate you will need to maintain your energy stores.

Immediate recovery after exercise (0-4hrs): 1-1.2 g/kg of body weight/hour

General recommendations for total daily carbohydrate intake (dependant on training regime)
:

Moderate duration/low-intensity training: 5-7g/kg of body weight/day

Moderate to heavy endurance training: 7-12g/kg of body weight/day

Extreme exercise program (4-6+ hours/day): 10-12g/kg of body weight/day

Post-Exercise/Event Refueling

The first two hours are the most effective time for replenishing energy stores exhausted or depleted from a training session or event. 1 gram per kg of body weight of carbohydrate immediately following a session to replenish muscle glycogen stores is recommended to maximise recovery. This means if you weigh 75kg you need a snack containing 75 grams of carbohydrate. Repeat this every hour or until normal meals resume. High GI sources immediately following exercise are best as they are easily accessible to your muscles for storage.

Common examples of a 50 gram carbohydrate source with 10 grams of protein to aid with muscle repair are small tin of baked beans with 2 slices of multigrain toast, 250-350ml of fruit smoothie or milk-shake, 60g breakfast cereal with 1/2 cup low fat milk or 1 cup of fruit with 200mL of low fat yoghurt.

Pure snack sources containing 50 grams of carbohydrate include 800-1000mL of sports drink, 800mL cordial, 3 medium pieces of fruit or 2 bananas, 1 sandwich with jam or honey or 500mL of juice.

Following a strenuous session or event high GI, low fibre sources of carbohydrate are often the easiest to consume and cause the least amount of gastrointestinal discomfort. Sports drinks, cordial and fruit juice offer a great source of high GI carbohydrate and will also contribute to rehydration.

Post-Exercise Hydration

Fluid losses during exercise will be different for each individual and will depend on the type and intensity of the workout. Fluid losses will occur due to sweating and evaporation of mouth water vapour. In the hours following exercise the body's metabolism is elevated and you will continue to lose fluids.

It is essential that you rehydrate following a workout and it is recommended that you replenish these stores with 150% of the fluids you have lost in the subsequent 2-4 hours. This means if you lose 1L of fluids that you should be consuming 1.5L of fluid following your workout.

If you find you can't drink that much water, you can try a sports drink or cordial. Yes - protein shakes count!

Avoid caffeinated drinks such as coke and energy drinks as these will act as diuretics and cause you to lose most of the fluid you have consumed!

If you are not sure how much fluid you lose during a workout an easy was to figure it out is to weigh yourself before and after the workout. The difference between pre and post weights will be how much fluid you have lost during the workout (making sure that you subtract any fluid that you consumed during the workout from the post-workout weight first).

Niccola Clark - Prac Student

I'm Niccola Clark and I am currently in my 5th year of human movement and dietetics at Queensland University of Technology. I have a love for travelling, fitness and food and this was part of the inspiration for my choice of degree. When I complete my degree I hope to combine all three things by volunteering with public health projects overseas in disadvantaged communities. While at Fitnance I am hoping to gain some more practical experience working with clients and broaden my knowledge base.

Congratulations to Angus Galloway

Sunshine Coast 22 d Jets 12

THE Sunshine Coast Sea Eagles scored a dramatic 22-12 win over the Ipswich Jets to register their first points of the Intrust Super Cup season.

The Coast led 10-6 at half-time after tries to electric fullback Hughie Stanley and powerful centre Maa Ruua.

The home team punished an ill-disciplined Jets outfit in the opening 40 minutes and was unlucky not to be ahead by more.

The Jets went into the game without skipper Keiron Lander and five other injured front-liners and their playing stocks took a further hit when centre Donald Malone was sent off for striking in the 25th minute.

Jets 40 d Burleigh 4

THE Ipswich Jets ran in eight tries to thrash the Burleigh Bears 40-4 in their round 13 Intrust Super Cup match.

The win saw the Jets reclaim fourth spot from the Bears, who were never in the hunt on a cold night at the North Ipswich Reserve.

Burleigh conceded five tries in the first 40 minutes to trail 24-0, prompting coach Paul Bramley to let loose in the dressing sheds with a few choice words.

His half-time address seemed to spark the Bears into action when play resumed as the visitors posted the first points of the second half through Hayden Allsop.

However, the Jets had the final say with three more tries to bury the Bears.

Easts 24 d Jets 22

THE Easts Tigers have gone back-to-back for the first time in 2011 with a 24-22 victory over the Ipswich Jets at the North Ipswich Reserve.

Easts trailed the Jets by 10 points on three separate occasions during the game but came from behind to post a crucial win in the context of their season.

The Tigers’ ball control was almost perfect – they completed 37 from 38 sets – against an Ipswich side that were often guilty of pushing the pass.

The win was even more impressive considering the Tigers lost skipper Shane Neumann and experienced prop James Stosic to hamstring injuries midway through the second half.

A fired up Ipswich started the match in sensational fashion with two quick tries in the opening 10 minutes, before Easts stabilised when winger Adam Breen’s fingertip control saw him latch onto a cross field kick in the 19th minute.

However, the Jets increased their lead to 16-6 thanks to the Gold Coast Titans backline combination of Esi Tonga and Luke Capewell, with Capewell supporting a long range Tonga bust.

The Tigers kept plugging away though – they set up camp on the opposition line and finally found reward when some quick hands saw Breen find an unopposed passage to the tryline, reducing the deficit to 16-12 at the break.

Ipswich opened the second half with Capewell’s second off a Donald Malone break but Easts clawed their way back again when Kaufmann ducked under the defence to score with 20 minutes left on the clock.

Errors and penalties crippled the Jets and the visitors struck the critical blow when Matt Zgrajewski popped an offload in traffic for young five-eighth Rhys Jacks.

In an unblemished day with the boot Breen slotted the conversion to give Easts the lead, taking his personal tally to 16 points for the match.

Ipswich has now slipped to fifth on the ladder and could be without utility Ian Lacey (knee) for an extended period after the former Bronco was carried from the field in the second half.

Lots of Money for Health in the Budget but not Fitness!

ADV ANCING THE FITNESS INDUSTRY INTO THE FRONT LINE OF PRIMARTY HEALTH CARE
A few weeks ago the Commonwealth Government announced a Health Department budget of $60,000,000,000 confirming the greatest level of protection for any one industry in the history of the country. A lot of this money has been wasted at the expense of a bloated, expensive and increasingly ineffective medical industry.
The medical industry has salted away hundreds of billions of dollars over the last 35 years and what have we got for it? A community that is becoming unfitter and unhealthier by the week.
We are currently faced with three great personally-generated body system dysfunctions
- metabolic
- musculo-skeletal and
- psychological.
The root cause of metabolic dysfunction is a lack of aerobic fitness activity. Rarely is aerobic fitness measured by a GP. They'll measure everything but; blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose ..., but not the underlying cause of the problem.
Rarely will a GP prescribe aerobic activity in a dosage likely to make an impact on the condition. The best they can do is send their unfit and unhealthy clients to the chemist. Rarely will a GP measure how strong and flexible a person is when they present with musculo-skeletal dysfunction. Rarely will they be able to work out the underlying cause of the dysfunction.
Rarely, if ever will they prescribe a strength and flexibility routine to get the body back in alignment. Instead they send their clients to the chemist or the manipulator.
This is the second reason why fitness practitioners need to elbow their way to the front line of primary health care and the Government provide them with the sorts of inducements that encourage people to go to them.
Aerobic fitness also plays a role in psychological dysfunction, where a year's supply of regular vigorous activity trumps a year's supply of Prozac. This is just another reason why the fitness practitioner should be included in the depression case mix.
The medical industry model has had 35 years to prove itself. It's come up wanting. It's become part of the problem, not part of the solution.

The great tragedy of this budget is that the role of the fitness industry in the development and maintenance of high level wellness has, once again been ignored.
