Childhood and adolescent obesity in growing concern in the Australian population, with obesity rates increasing dramatically over the last decade. Childhood obesity has both short term and long term effects on health. Excess weight leads to self esteem, mood and social disturbances, which continues to fuel poor eating habits. Bone growth, endocrine and cardiovascular dysfunction are associated problems, which can lead to a number of cardiovascular, metabolic and pulmonary disorders later in life. Childhood obesity needs to be tackled early in order to prevent the growing obesity in the Australian population.
