ASTHMA & EXERCISE

ASTHMA & EXERCISE
People affected by Asthma don’t need to hold back from keeping fit- you should be able to participate in almost any sport or exercise. In fact it is even more important for people with asthma to be fit. Scuba diving is the only sport that is not recommended, according to Asthma Foundations Australia.

If physical exertion causes you to cough, feel tight in the chest, be short of breath or Wheeze, and these symptoms don’t improve with the rest within minutes, see your doctor for advice as you may have exercise- induced asthma.

“ Exercise can trigger the signs of asthma, but it’s the one trigger we ask people not to avoid,” Says AFA chief executive officer Robin Ould. “There is clear evidence that people who have good general health and are fit have better health outcomes with asthma then those who are overweight.
“In developing your written asthma action plan, if exercise is a trigger, then with your GP work out a specific regimen, which may include taking reliever medication immediately prior to exercise.”

Guilt-free Coffee

Guilt-free Coffee
A recent study from Sweden and Finland has found that people who drink coffee may lower their risk of developing dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. The researchers followed more than 1400 over 20 and found that those who drank three to five cups of coffee a day were less likely to develop dementia and Alzheimer’s compared to those who drank little or no coffee. Of course, don’t forget the many studies that show moderation is the key to safe coffee drinking.

Improve Your Cycling

Three ways that improved core stability will improve your cycling:

1. Less lateral hip rock during pedaling. (Therefore more efficient pedaling. When you watch the great cyclists ride, their hips remain still)
2. Better posture on the bike (therefore more efficient pedaling and more aerodynamic positioning)
3. Better force transfer from your whole body to the pedals.

Training Tip:
If you try to accomplish everything, you won't accomplish anything. Pick a single goal, and dedicate yourself to achieving that goal.

Squat Depth? Ass To The Grass?

Ass To The Grass? Squat Depth?

Squats are an awesome exercise. But how deep should you go?

Theories that deep squats heighten injury risk can be traced to studies conducted by Karl Klein at the University of Texas in the olden days. Klein concluded that squatting below parallel had a detrimental effect on the ligamentous stability and therefore should be discouraged.

Research has since shown that Klein’s findings were incorrect and showed there is no link between deep squatting and injury risk. In fact, the opposite was shown : Deep squats increase stability of the knee joint.

The decision as to how low to squat, should therefore be based on an individual’s goals. Those with PLC disorders should refrain from squatting below 50 to 60 degrees until the injury is fully healed. Disorders such as chondromalacia, osteoarthritis, and osteochondritis may also contraindicate the performance of deep squats. To optimize development of the gluteus maximus, squats should be carried out through their full range of motion. (To get a big butt squat deep) To target the quadriceps femoris, a squat depth of 90 degrees appears to be optimal.

Ass to the grass I say!
