How to Breathe During Running

The most common breathing technique is a 3:2 inhale-to-exhale ratio; Breathing should incorporate a full inhale and full exhale. This means you INHALE on the LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT foot strikes and EXHALE fully on the RIGHT, LEFT foot strikes. This pattern is not that hard to turn into a habit, however it is likely that it may require you to slow down your running pace for a few runs in order to fully habituate the technique. You will notice your heart rate decrease significantly for the same work load because you are now able to get more oxygen in and also to push more carbon dioxide out of your body. You may notice that you naturally drop to a 2:1 ratio when you run at a pace that is very difficult for you. That is OK. But realize it is difficult to maintain a pace that requires you to breathe at a 2:1 ratio.

Cycling & Lombard's Paradox

The motion of cycling can be split into 2 phase: the 'power phase' and the 'recovery phase'. The power phase begins when the leg is in a flexed position (top dead center - TDC) and continues through to when it is fully extended (bottom dead center - BDC). '

A: Top Dead Center (start of power phase)

B: Bottom Dead Center (end of power phase and start of recovery phase)

With regard to moving the leg through the phases, two muscles groups are primarily concerned with motions about the hip and knee joint; The Quadriceps and Hamstrings. Both of these muscle groups are 'bi-articular', meaning they span across both the hip and knee joint. The action of the Quadriceps group involves flexion of the upper leg about the hip joint and extension of the lower leg about the knee joint. In comparison, the Hamstring muscle group extends the upper leg about the hip joint and flexes the lower leg about the knee joint. When comparing the actions of these muscle at their respective joints, it can be seen that they are antagonists of each other (their actions oppose each other).

During the 'power phase' of cycling, both the upper and lower leg extend at the hip and knee joint, respectively. To initiate this movement, both the hamstrings (hip extension) and quadriceps (knee extension) must be active. This situation is referred to as 'Lombard's Paradox' as both muscle groups are active at the same time with each respective muscle apposing the desired motion at one joint. The situation is opposite during the 'recovery phase' - the quadriceps are needed for hip flexion and the hamstrings are needed for knee flexion. Once again, 'Lombard's Paradox' arises.

The reason this phenomenon can exist without compromising smooth and efficient motion is because each muscle group is able to selectively control how much force it produces across each joint. The locations at which the muscles insert into bone also assists in allowing this paradox to occur.

New UQ Prac Student

My name is Andrew, I’m 22 and I’m currently undertaking my prac placement at Fitnance. I am studying Clinical Exercise Physiology over at the University of QLD as part of the honours stream and will be completing my masters of Physiotherapy after I graduate next year. I am very much motivated by a healthy lifestyle and keep active by playing beach volleyball, mountain biking and taking the occasional hiking trip when I have time. I am currently training for a trek around Peru at the end of year where I will be walking the Inca trail and mountain biking down the Misti Volcano from 5000m!! I tutor musculo-skeletal anatomy at UQ and am in the process of finding a new form of classification for Paralympic athletes as part of my thesis. I like to promote a holistic approach to health and fitness and am a firm believer in a balance between social, physical and mental wellbeing. Following my studies I am hoping to become more involved in the fitness injury through continuing my research with paralympians and working as a sports physiotherapist. I’m looking forward to my next 10 weeks at Fitnance – I’ll be here every Monday so hopefully I’ll be able to meet many of you before I leave!
