The Rumble in the Jungle - Karni v Jarrod
5 words...Karni Liddell vs Jarrod Moncur. It is a highly anticipated 8-week challenge, where there can only be one winner. There will be nothing but hard work, no excuses. They have been chomping at the bit for this time to come, and finally we have the challenge. After much sledging and bickering between them over the past months, this challenge will finally be the decider as to which one of them is the toughest, fittest and essentially most superior. Who will be the winner? Only time (and hard work) will tell.

Get excited! Camp Fitnance is rapidly approaching and everyone is gearing up for an action-packed, fun-filled weekend. It will be held at Red Rock in NSW, Friday 21st October – Sunday 23rd October. There will be a vast array of activities offered including; kayaking, boxing, bush walking, surfing, fishing, lawn bowls and even a cooking class! Food will be provided and accommodation is offered at a very affordable price, with houses to rent over the 3-day period. You may come with your family, a couple of friends, or even just by yourself to escape the family for a bit!
Whether you’re after a relaxing weekend by the beach with some light activities, or a high-intensity exercising weekend, we have everyone covered. There will be a friendly (but potentially competitive) lawn bowls competition on the Friday night, a master chef night on the Saturday night (where everyone cooks their own signature healthy dish to bring for dinner to be judged by Steve Nance and other Fitnance crew), and plenty of TVs to watch the Rugby World Cup on the Friday night.

Bridge to Brisbane (September 11, 2011).
At Fitnance, currently there are only three words on everyone’s lips ….Bridge to Brisbane! This year is going to be bigger than ever. There will be blood, sweat and tears leading up to this event, as four of our most talented fight it out against each other to be the Bridge to Brisbane champion.
The Bridge to Brisbane is a well-known 10km race, starting at the Sir Leo Hielscher Bridge (formerly the Gateway Bridge) for a gruelling uphill climb, before travelling along Kingsford Smith Drive and Inner City Bypass, and finishing up at the RNA showgrounds. There has been trash talk and sabotaged training sessions, but everyone is looking in top form and at this stage it could be anyone’s game!
There have been whispers as to who the favourites are for this competition, and a sneaky tipping odds sheet has been leaked. At the moment the odds stand at:

The Unique Power of Exercise for Diabetics
We all know exercise is good for us. It increases our longevity and quality of life through increasing our cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength and power and psychological factors. Despite these factors, it is also particularly beneficial for diabetic sufferers.
In diabetes, the hormone insulin does not function as it should. In a healthy person, after consuming food, insulin is released from the pancreas and opens passageways in cells to allow glucose (energy) to flow in from the blood stream. When insulin is not working properly, this glucose builds up in the blood and cannot get into the cells. We get our energy from the glucose that goes into the cells; so when it can’t get in we feel hungry and without much energy. This sugar is then filtered out through our body in excess urine production making us feel thirsty and dehydrated.
Administration of intramuscular/subcutaneous insulin or oral hypoglycaemics assists in reducing the high blood sugar levels and increase movement of glucose into the cells. But what if there was a way to allow for movement of energy into cells without the need of these drugs?
Exercise is in fact the key. Whilst it should not completely replace these drugs, it serves the same very important role as these medications. It allows for transportation of glucose (energy) into the cells out of the bloodstream without the use of insulin.
In diabetes, exercise takes up the slack and takes over from the faulty insulin and unlocks the passageways in the cells for the glucose to travel through out of the bloodstream. This effect lasts above and beyond the duration of the exercise session. Studies have shown improved glucose transportation into the cells for up to 24-48 hours post exercise.
Thus, exercise is sparing the release of insulin, increasing usable energy supplies and decreasing signs and symptoms of low energy and dehydration. This is in addition to all the additional benefits exercise provides for healthy people. To date, studies have shown exercise is the preferred and most effective treatment method for diabetes.

A Challenging week for The Jets'
And so do his teammates at the Seagulls, who defied another onslaught from a committed rugby league outfit to extend their unbeaten run yesterday.
Davis casually potted a late field goal in the Tweed’s 11-4 win over the Jets at the North Ipswich Reserve to take the Seagulls another step closer to an unbeaten regular season in the Intrust Super Cup.
The Seagulls were made to work overtime by a below-strength but desperate Ipswich Jets outfit in their round 20 encounter.
Ipswich put plenty of early effort into their tackles in the first half and were rewarded with the opening try in the seventh minute after Ramon “Monster” Filipine was the first to a Brendon Lindsay kick behind the line.
Tweed was quick to respond though after a charge down put the visitors deep on the attack. The competition’s most potent attacking team then put the ball through the hands following a neat off-load from Aaron Cannings.
The former Titans prop linked with fullback Ryan Milligan, who fired a long ball out to try-scoring machine Nat Barnes.
The two sides went to the half-time break locked at 4-4, but it was the Jets who came closest to gaining the upper hand on the scoreboard in a torrid opening 40 minutes.
It took a desperate diving tackle from Tweed iron man Ryan Simpkins to pull down flying Ipswich centre Brendan Marshall just short of the try-line.
The start of the second half was another tight struggle but it was the Seagulls who were the first to score through James Wood.
The Queensland Residents representative gathered a loose kick off the ground from deep inside Tweed territory and set off on a 90m dash to the try-line.
The try came only minutes after the Tweed were denied a four pointer to leaping winger Tom Merritt, who appeared to be unlucky not to be awarded a try after he outjumped Ipswich opponent Jarrod McInally to catch a Davis kick.
Ipswich threw plenty at the Tweed in the concluding stages but the hosts weren’t able to conjure an all important second try.
The Jets’ prospects of bringing down the Tweed weren’t helped by the departure of experienced halfback Ian Lacey (hamstring) early in the second half.
Ipswich remains in fifth spot on the ladder and can cement that position with a victory over the Central Comets next weekend.
Tweed Heads will play the Redcliffe Dolphins in the ABC TV match of the round.

Lessons From The Blue Zones (the worlds longest living populations)
- Move Naturally – Gain 4 Years
1. Just Move
The world’s longest-lived people don’t pump iron, run marathons or join gyms. Instead, they live in environments that constantly nudge them into moving without thinking about it. They live in places where they can walk to the store, to their friends house or places of worship, their houses have stairs, they have gardens in their yards.
Consider making things a little inconvenient. Make that extra trip up or down the stairs instead of loading things at the top or bottom to take up later, walk to your airport gate instead of taking the moving walkway, park far from the entrance, walk a dog, do your own yard and house work, get rid of some the time saving electronics and power equipment that have “simplified” your life.
Right Outlook – Gain 4 Years
2. Purpose Now
Knowing your sense of purpose is worth up to seven years of extra life expectancy. The Okinawans call it “ikigai” and the Nicoyans call it “plan de vida;” for both it translates to “why I wake up in the morning.” Do an internal inventory. Be able to articulate your values, passions, gifts and talents. What are the things you like to do and the things you don’t? Then incorporate ways to put your skills into action.
3. Down Shift
Even people in the Blue Zones experience stress. Stress leads to chronic inflammation which is associated with every major age-related disease. What the world’s longest-lived people have that we don’t are routines to shed that stress. Okinawans take a few moments each day to remember their ancestors, Adventists pray, Ikarians take a nap and Sardinians do happy hour. Find a stress shedding strategy that works for you and make it routine.
Eat Wisely – Gain 8 Years
4. 80% Rule
Marketers tell us we can eat our way to health. America has been eating its way well beyond health. Our strategy focuses on taking things out — instead of putting more things in — our diet. “Hara hachi bu” – the Okianawan, 2500-year old Confucian mantra said before meals reminds them to stop eating when their stomach is 80 percent full. The 20% gap between not being hungry and feeling full could be the difference between losing weight or gaining it. Serve food at the counter, store leftovers, then sit down to enjoy the meal. Replace your big dishes with 10” plates. Remove TV’s from the kitchen. People in the Blue Zones eat their smallest meal in the late afternoon or early evening and then they don’t eat any more the rest of the day.
5. Plant Slant
Go ahead and eat meat if you want. But consider it a condiment and try the leanest, finest meat you can afford. Try to limit it to a portion the size of a deck of cards and only twice per week. Beans, including fava, black and soy and lentils are the cornerstone of most centenarian diets. Snacking on nuts–about a handful a day has been associated with and extra 2-3 years of life expectancy.
6. Wine @ 5
Moderate drinkers outlive non-drinkers. The trick is to drink 1-2 drinks per day (preferably Sardinian Cannonau wine), with friends and/or with food. And no, you can’t save up all weekend and have 14 drinks on Saturday.
Connect – Gain 4 Years
7. Belong
All but five of the 263 centenarians we interviewed belonged to some faith-based community. It doesn’t matter if you’re Christian, Buddhist, Muslim, Jewish or some other religion that meets as a community. Research shows that attending faith-based services four times per month will add 4-14 years of life expectancy.
8. Loved Ones First
Successful centenarians in the Blue Zones put their families first. This means keeping your aging parents and grandparents near by or in your home. (It lowers disease and mortality rates of children in the home too.) Work on being in a positive, committed relationship (which can add up to 3 years of life expectancy) and invest in your children with time and love. (They’ll be more likely to care for you when the time comes.)
9. Right Tribe
The world’s longest lived people chose–or were born into–social circles that supported healthy behaviors, Okinawans created ”moais”–groups of five friends that committed to each other for life. Research from the Framingham Studies show that smoking, obesity, happiness, and even loneliness is contagious. Assessing who you hang out with, and then proactively surrounding yourself with the right friends, will do more to add years to your life than just about anything else
Getting Massive With Forced Anabolism

An Aggressive approach not for the feint hearted.
A mass-seeking lifter has to overcome the energy-sapping variables that life presents in order to
guarantee anabolism (muscle growth). Frankly, that takes an element of aggression. A man can't
just be thinking he's eating more. He must be eating more. So forget what you believe to be eating
more, and get serious in the battle of the knife and fork. If you're not eating again when you're not
"ready," you're simply not eating enough. We're not using the term "battle" inadvertently here. This
isn't always fun. It's not a "dirty bulk" done purely for enjoyment. It's a goal-oriented, serious
endeavour that can be very tough. There's a price to pay to become more muscular than those
around you. You must get more aggressive. Controlled aggression can pay dividends, though. You
just need a plan and the cajones to stick to it for months until the weight is gained.
Here's how:
10 Pounds of Scale Weight
Step 1:
For a while, you're going to focus on the scale. Your first goal is to "eat on" 10 pounds of scale
weight.
Use Chris Shugart's weighing guidelines for consistent feedback: Weigh first thing in the morning,
after a bathroom trip and before eating or drinking anything. Use the same scale every time. Don't
weigh at other times of the day or use different scales.
Now, EAT. Eat until you put ten pounds on the scale using the same weighing guidelines as above.
This may take a month. It may take three. Doesn't matter. Forget fussing with 100 extra calories here
and there. Eat.
Always carry portable foods like apples and peanut butter, low-sugar granola bars, dried fruit and
mixed nuts, FINiBARs and protein shakes. Drinking plentiful calories is huge. At time, liquids may be
33-50% of calorie intake when appetite fails. Fine, do what you need to do to keep meals big,
frequent, and moderately clean. A skipped meal is like a skipped workout. Believe it.
Stop fearing dietary fat and quality carbs, especially around workouts. Remember, these calories are
your ticket onward and upward. The scale will be your impartial judge.
Step 2:
Reach your new body mass: 10 pounds, or about 5-8% above your baseline body weight. Don't
pussy-foot around. If you're eating like a man, you should be half-way there in a month.
You can tolerate the 10-pound gain, even if it's 30-40% fat mass at first. Let's say it again: the scale is
an impartial judge of whether you're winning the battle of the knife and fork. Do you want to remain
stuck at 180 pounds forever, or force your way into a bigger shirt size?
Step 3:
Hold your new size for six months to recompose it with heavier and more intense lifting. As a bigger
man, you can lift more. If you aren't lifting hard, you'll just get fat.
Now, check out some of the good things about how a heavy lifter's body responds to aggressively
moving the fork when he's also aggressively moving more plates in the gym.
A warning to those who are overweight already:
There are limits to this aggressive approach. If you're already over 18% fat or you can't discern
moderately-clean overfeeding from junk food bingeing, this approach isn't for you. Family history of
obesity? Not for you either.

IPSWICH snapped a two-match losing streak with a hard-fought 26-16 victory over the Norths Devils on Saturday to put itself in a prime position to seal fifth spot on the Intrust Super Cup ladder.
The 10-point victory provided the Jets (22) with a handy buffer over Wynnum Manly (17) and Mackay Cutters (17) with just three regular season matches remaining.
However, Ipswich co-coaches Shane and Ben Walker weren’t too fussed over the competition standings in the wake of yesterday’s round 19 clash at the North Ipswich Reserve.
The Walkers were more concerned about a mounting injury toll that could threaten Ipswich’s run into the finals.
Queensland Residents forward Lorenzo Maafu (ankle) and tough prop Nat Neale (ribs) failed to complete the match and are unlikely starters against the all-conquering Tweed Heads outfit in next Saturday’s ABC TV clash.
The Jets went into the match with the Devils without injured pair Luke Capewell and Brendan Marshall.
Fortunately for the home team, Donald Malone and Esi Tonga lifted in their absence, with both players scoring crucial second half tries.
Tonga scored his first midway through the second half to put the Jets in front 14-10. Ipswich then stretched its lead to 20-10 when a series of quick passes to the right provided an overlap for Ramon Filipine who did the rest.
Malone put the icing on the cake for the hosts with a strong effort to score a try that was converted by Brendon Lindsay for a 26-10 lead.
A four-pointer on the stroke of fulltime from Keiran English, followed by a Joel Bailey conversion, reduced the final margin to 10 points.

Does dieting make you fat?
The overweight and obesity epidemic is a worldwide problem. Obesity rates in Australia have more than doubled over the past 20 years. According to Fitness Australia over 7 million adults are jeopardizing their health by excessive weight. As a result children are following their parents examples and it is estimated that over one in 5 children are obese. The rates of overweight and obesity are rapidly increasing and it is estimated that, at the current rate of increase, about 75 per cent of the Australian population will be overweight or obese by 2020.
It seems like a contradiction: Diet and you'll get fatter. The problem is not with the dieting itself, but how you approach it. When it comes to dieting, most people fail. In fact, up to 95 percent of people who go on a diet regain all the weight they lost. Our bodies are programmed to understand hunger signals and not to diet. When you deprive your body of food, it will get the message that there's a risk of starvation. As a result, your hunger will increase and your metabolism will slow down to compensate for it. Once you get off the diet, your mind will go into overdrive and make you want to eat more to make up for the deprivation you just suffered. This is your body's way of preparing for possible famine. As a result, you might end up eating more than you did before the diet, to soothe both your emotions and your body. Also, by trying to lose large amounts of weight quickly, you throw your body into disarray. This might cause weight loss but it's likely to be a temporary solution. This means that once you go back to your regular eating habits, you're more likely to regain this weight back. More than 60 percent of dieters regain all the weight lost within a year of giving up their diets. Within five years, almost all dieters are back to their original weight.
Instead of focusing on instant gratification, the key to permanent weight loss is to think long-term. For example, choosing to eat whole grains instead of highly processed carbohydrates (fast food) is a healthy choice that will pay off over time: you'll be healthier, gain energy and lose weight. The key to successful weight loss is making changes in your eating and physical activity habits that you can keep up for the rest of your life

The many practices of yoga: gentle, restorative, power, and hot style, among others, appeal to people seeking anything from a vigorous workout or rehab to meditation or stress relief. Women tend to prefer the more gentle styles of yoga while Men tend to favor the more athletic, fast-moving styles such as Vinyasa and Ashtanga. Many discover that holding the most intense positions, builds strength not the brute strength of a power lifter but the tensile strength of a martial-arts master.
There is a growing cadre of pro athletes going yoga. How do we know yoga really works? Research, suggests a wide variety of health-positive effects-for arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, coronary-artery disease and asthma, among other things. Researchers found that 15 weeks of yoga training brought a 10 percent improvement in lung capacity. Dr. Dean Ornish has found evidence that yoga can help fight cardiovascular disease. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, part of the National Institutes of Health, is currently supporting its use for insomnia and chronic lower-back pain. In late 2010, study results found that participants who practiced yoga experienced better moods and less anxiety. In addition, the new data suggest that yoga boosts levels of the brain's primary inhibitory neurotransmitter that helps induce relaxation.

Pride v Jets Result
The Northern Pride set up a comfortable 36-20 victory over the Ipswich Jets at Barlow Park on Saturday night.
The Pride had that killer instinct in abundance in the first half as they stamped their class on the contest. Five-eighth Mick Wilson kick-started the charge by snaffling an intercept to run 50m and score under the posts.
The Jets kicked out from the restart and paid for their mistake when Pride halfback Ryan Ghietti stepped through flimsy goal-line defence to also plant the ball near the sticks. Fielding their strongest pack of the year, the Pride began dominating field position and it was replacement forward Ricky Thorby who found the line next to stretch their lead to 18-0. The Jets hit back through hooker Michael Fisher but Thorby ensured the Pride went into the break 24-6 in front when he crashed over for his second four-pointer near halftime.Jets centre Donald Malone kept his side in the contest when he shrugged off a couple of would-be defenders to make it 24-10 five minutes after the restart. The Jets threatened a miracle comeback when fullback Luke Capewell and Malone scored the next two tries.But the Pride sealed the win when winger Michael Bani scored in the corner after a cross-field kick.
The JETS take on Souths at home on Saturday.

I am passionate about health, nutrition, wellness and sports which lead me to choose a degree in Human Movement (Clinical Exercise Physiology) at the University of Queensland. I am doing a variety of sports since my youngest age and I am particularly interested in running, fitness, surfing, windsurfing, kite surfing and Yoga. I have been practicing Yoga since the age of 6 and I have started this year a 9 months Yoga Teacher training course. I am a very enthusiastic person and love helping people to achieve their goals. When I complete my degree I hope to combine my exercise science and yoga knowledge to help people achieve a healthier lifestyle, gain self-confidence and attain a mental and physical balance.
